Why solar panels get dirty

Solar panels on the Eastside collect pollen in the spring, dust in the dry summer months, and needles, leaves and bird droppings all year round. Homes under evergreens pick up sap and a damp green film. Rain rinses some of it off, but a lot of it dries onto the glass, especially on lower-pitch roofs where water sits longer.

A dirty panel lets less light reach the cells. How much that matters depends on your system, your roof and how dirty the panels are, so we don't promise a specific gain. What we can tell you is that clean glass looks better and lets the sun do its job.

How we clean solar panels

We clean solar panels by hand, the same way we clean windows. We don't use water-fed poles on the Kirkland side. Our crews access the panels safely from ladders and the roof where it's appropriate, and use soft brushes, mild cleaning solution and squeegees made for glass. We avoid harsh chemicals, abrasive pads and high pressure that could damage the glass, coatings, seals or wiring.

We also clear needles and debris from around and under the panel edges where we can reach them, since trapped debris holds moisture. If we see damaged panels, loose wiring, nesting animals or anything that looks like it needs your solar installer, we'll point it out and leave it for them.

Check your panel manufacturer's or installer's cleaning recommendations before booking. If they have specific requirements, share them with us and we'll follow them.

When to clean solar panels

Many Eastside homeowners clean panels after spring pollen season and again in late summer after the dry, dusty months. Panels under trees may need more frequent attention. We can combine solar cleaning with a roof blow-off, gutter cleaning or window cleaning in a single visit.

Common questions

Will cleaning increase my power output?

It can help, but it depends on how dirty the panels are and on your system. We don't promise a specific number. Your inverter or monitoring app is the best way to see the difference.

Do you use water-fed poles?

No. On the Kirkland side we clean solar panels by hand with soft brushes and squeegees.

Do you need to go on my roof?

Often, yes. We access panels from ladders and the roof where it's safe to do so. If the roof is too steep or the panels can't be reached safely, we'll tell you.

Can you also do the gutters and windows?

Yes. Many homeowners combine solar panel cleaning with a roof blow-off, gutter cleaning or window cleaning.

Will cleaning affect my warranty?

Check with your installer or manufacturer. If they have cleaning requirements, share them and we'll follow them.

How we work

We're a hands-on company. Our crews clean windows by hand from ladders up to three stories, and we don't use water-fed poles. Before we start any job, we go over what you want done, and if something looks unsafe or outside what we do, we'll say so plainly rather than guess. When we're finished, we check the work and clean up after ourselves.

Why Pane'N The Glass

Pane'N The Glass has focused on careful, hands-on exterior cleaning since 2005. We keep our work simple: explain what we're going to do, do it carefully, and tell you honestly about anything we can't do. Many of our customers start with one service and add others, like windows, gutters, roof moss treatment or house washing, so their whole home stays in good shape through the Eastside's long wet season.
